Help Build Winter’s New Home
Winter, the miraculous young dolphin who lost her tail to the entangling lines of a crab trap in December, 2005, but survived despite all odds, is growing up. She is outgrowing her baby dolphin pool and needs more room.
Plus, now that she is growing accustomed to her new prosthetic tail, she can swim faster and more easily when she is wearing it, so needs more swimming space to exercise with it. Her healthy development depends on learning how to use her new tail to its full potential.
Therefore, Clearwater Marine Aquarium is renovating a huge water holding tank (forty feet in diameter, 160,000 gallons) to bring it up to USDA Certified standards to serve as a new home for Winter. This tank has been used in emergencies for holding stranded dolphins, but to serve as a permanent home, it needs a lot of work.
One of the great features of the new tank is that it will have windows, so you will be able to see Winter close-up! Closeted away in her smaller pool, she has not been easily viewable by the public. Being the little show-off that she is, she will be much happier having an audience, as well.
Her adoptive Mom, Panama, will share the tank with her so she won’t be lonely. They play together and exercise together, but have been limited in what they can do. We expect both Panama and Winter to be much calmer and happier, and develop new and exciting games.
