The Stranding Team

Thank you for your interest in joining the Stranding Team! Our team consist of mostly volunteers, as well as staff and interns, and is dedicated to the conservation of cetaceans, sea turtles, and North American River otters through stranding efforts. Stranding efforts may included, but are not limited to, live and deceased animal responses, rehabilitation, release, necropsy, research, and education outreach. The Stranding Team seeks enthusiastic, dedicated, and hardworking individuals to join our team!

Qualifications & Review Process
The Stranding Team application period is open twice a year (usually at the beginning of the year and at the end of summer). If you are interested in applying you must meet the following criteria:

  • Volunteer at Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) for 6+ consecutive months OR work (as staff/intern) at CMA for 4+ consecutive months
  • 2014 Stranding Basics Certified (includes passing the associated comprehensive exam)
    • The Stranding Basics is a workshop that covers, as stated in the name, the basics of strandings including our history, mission, goals, stranding statistics, as well as equipment and sanitation. The exam portion is provided at the end of the workshop, to ensure that members retain most/all of the critical points.
  • Complete the Stranding Team Application during the application period and have a primary CMA supervisor submit the application to the Stranding Team staff
