POSITION TITLE: Manatee Photo-Identification Intern

The intern’s primary responsibility will be to assist research staff in their efforts to identify and document individual manatees that are utilizing springs within the central Florida counties of Marion, Putnam, Lake and Volusia. The identification of individual manatees provides insight regarding manatee movements, site fidelity, habitat choice, behavior, survivability and reproductive rates. Data will be collected using a polarized digital camera or underwater camera from either a boat or kayak in such a manner that will not disturb manatees while they find refuge in the warm water habitat. Interns will also assist with data entry, scar sketching, photo processing and upkeep of field equipment.

The internship will span over a five-month period December 1, 2019, through April 30, 2020, with a minimum commitment of three days per week for four months’ requirement. The position does require applicant to work early mornings with most field work completion occurring before 3pm. Applicant should be flexible as plans can change last minute or emergencies can arise without notice. Weekend work may sometimes be requested if monitoring activity is dependent on the arrival and duration of cold weather.

Travel to the northeast field office located west of St. Augustine will be required monthly for data processing and compilation.
