ATLANTIC BOTTLENOSE DOLPHINS

Universally loved, dolphins are our best-known animals. Bottlenose dolphins inhabit both temperate and tropical waters and are usually found in pods, or schools. In North America, the bottlenose dolphin is found along both coasts of the United States. These highly intelligent and social animals communicate with each other with various clicks and whistles and generally frequent harbors, bays, lagoons and estuaries. The potential life span is as long as 35-50 years, with female dolphins tending to live longer than male. While bottlenose dolphins are not endangered, some populations are depleted. In U.S. waters, they are protected by the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. Bottlenose dolphins are a top predator in the ocean, with few predators of their own. Sharks and killer whales occasionally prey upon them but the major threat comes from humans, when they are caught in fishing gear.

NICK’S STORY

In 2002, a female Atlantic bottlenose dolphin and male calf stranded near Gibsonton, Florida and were transported to the Florida Aquarium and then relocated to Clearwater Marine Aquarium for long-term medical care. In honor of their Christmas Eve arrival, we named the cow Noelle and her calf, Nicholas. Noelle had sustained third-degree burns around her dorsal fin and was believed to have respiratory illness. Unfortunately, she passed away 3 days later. Nicholas lost 30 pounds and suffered second and third-degree sunburns across 36% of his body. With the help of constant wound care management, Nicholas’ burns healed within nine months but did not make a suitable candidate for release because of his dependent status at the time of his stranding and rehabilitation. He lacks the necessary survival skills, such as hunting and the skills to protect himself from predators, all of which he can only learn from his mother. Today, Nicholas is smart and energetic. He loves figuring out problems during training sessions and is known for doing a flip or two when he gets an answer right.
