Even though “Leesburg” was killed by human interaction, her story inspired so many to learn more about manatees. Her journey will live on by the invaluable movement data she provided researchers and residents that live and play on the Ocklawaha waterways, all the way down to Leesburg, Florida.

On Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) rescue personnel assisted with the rescue of an entangled female manatee in Oldsmar, Florida.
The manatee was entrapped within an enclosed creek in Weeki Wachee, Florida. The animal likely was able to swim into the creek with the increased tides during Hurricane Irma
The manatee pair were trapped within the canal system, requiring relocation. With no way out of the canal system, a plan was put in place by FWC to capture and assess the health of the mom and calf with the intention of relocation.
